New Artists in Stylized Worlds
How the illustration comes to life through lighting, lensing, and staging
From graphic-novel flatness in Tin Tin: Destination Moon to painterly softness in Blacksad: Somewhere Within the Shadows. We will analyze and deconstruct existing artwork, discuss the elements of Stylized films, and look at the lighting and camera choices that give films like Spider-Verse and Ultraman their signature look, across both the 3D render and the compositing pipeline.
The workshop covers the latest in stylized rendering, in both 2D compositing and 3D rendering. It's a live demo, broken up by five short projects from artists Henri Gatard, Claudia Palumbo, Michael Weigl, Daniel Anderson De La Sota Riva, and Lucia Alvarez Cisneros, who started out in stylization and whom we mentored along the way, plus the author of the tools, Christos Obretenov (RenderMan Stylized Looks Lead Developer & Lollipop Shaders).
We are inviting new artists to our mentoring program for the upcoming year: bring a printed A3 mood board and pitch your stylized project for consideration.
Tools Used: Foundry's Katana, Maya, Pixar's RenderMan Stylized Looks, Foundry Nuke, Lollipop Shaders custom tools
