Gray Marshall, MS, MFA
Chair of Visual Effects, SCAD
Much like the legendary Buckaroo Banzai, Gray was destined to live his life going in two directions at once. With Masters Degrees in both Cinema Production and Computer Science, he’s never been happy just doing “the art”, nor burrowing down into “the science”, but rather preferred to combine the two. Whether it was piloting the Starship Enterprise (NCC-1701D!) using computers to shoot models, being part of the Nuke development team at Digital Domain to further enhance artists’ abilities, striving to create “invisible” VFX for all manner of storytellers, joining every freakin’ committee that even came close to how artists work with technology, or bringing the full depth of an image to life using the very latest in color grading tools, Gray has always worked towards combining science and art to get the machines out of the way, so that artists can create and storytellers can entertain.
His colorist credits include 11 Marvel Films, from “Age of Ultron” to “Avengers: Endgame”, plus “The Revenant” and “Bridge of Spies”, while his VFX work has spanned everything from “Apollo 13” and “Titanic” to “Fight Club” and “The Hangover”. He joined SCAD as Chair of Visual Effects in September, 2020.
