David Bianchi
Director of Photography, LUCA, Pixar Animation Studios
David Bianchi joined Pixar Animation Studios in April of 2015 as a Layout Artist on “Finding Dory.” He then went on to work as a Layout Lead on “Cars 3,” and the Academy Award©-winning film “Toy Story 4.” In addition to his feature film work, Bianchi also worked as Director of Photography, Layout and 3D Story Artist on the Disney+ series “Forky Asks A Question.” He most recently served as Director of Photography, Layout on Pixar’s newest film “Luca,” which released on Disney+ on June 18, 2021. Bianchi is currently working as Director of Photography, Layout on an unannounced Pixar project.
As Director of Photography, Layout, Bianchi leads a crew of Layout Artists who are responsible for the camera and staging on a film. His team takes storyboards, scripts, and thumbnails, and turns them into a working cut of the movie, that is then disseminated out to other departments to work on. As Director of Photography, one of Bianchi’s main responsibilities is ensuring the work of his department matches what the Director’s visual and story goals are for a film, while simultaneously communicating with other departments to ensure their ideas or technical considerations are being adhered to as well.
Prior to Pixar, Bianchi worked as a Layout and Previsualization Artist at Pacific Data Images/DreamWorks Animation for seven years. He had originally started at PDI/DreamWorks Animation as an intern, before being promoted to a Production Assistant and then Coordinator.
Bianchi grew up in Santa Cruz, California and attended San Francisco State University where he received a BA in Graphic Design. Following his time at SFSU, he attended SAE Expression College in Emeryville, CA where he studied Digital Visual Media.
He currently lives in San Francisco, CA.
