Killers of the Flower Moon: Telling the Story with Sound
Art and movies have the power to move culture forward. As filmmakers, we are stewards of one of the oldest things humans do: telling stories. Stories move adolescents into adulthood, preserve the history of the culture, teach right and wrong, and create emotional experiences.
The idea is how to use the creative sound palette during the entire process of making a film, telling the story.
The essential sound arts provide a wide range of possibilities to bring the film's character and environment directly to the audience, in a very emotional way.
Production Sound is not something secondary, or something that is added to the film later, but is achieved when the film is shot. It's a process that begins before filming commences and continues until the end of the production phase.
The technology of our tool set changes rapidly. It provides a very evolved methodology compared to 30 years ago.Today, we can do more than ever simultaneously, but it's not about the technology.
Again, it is about telling the story.
What is the best approach to manifests the underlying idea? What reveals character in the right way at the right moment? What supports the intent of the story? What is a multiplier of the idea at hand. What invites the audience to believe? When we find these answers, we use our instrument to convey them.
When working on the set, we perform in a group dynamic like musicians. We work together with the other artists to support the story. Sound is not an isolated part of the film. We work as a team and everyone contributes their part. Our Production Sound team spends 15 hours a day in close collaboration with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, or Robert Dinero, capturing their character essence for the film. Together we create something from nothing. Each shot is hand made.
