Forget About Getting Good Sound. Think Again About Telling Your Story

Mark Ulano has been recording sound for film professionally since 1976. Mark has mixed over 150 film and television projects. Most recently, he mixed Martin Scorcese’s KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON. His work on TITANIC won him an Academy Award for Sound Mixing as well as the Cinema Audio Society Award for Best Sound mixing for a Feature Film. He was Oscar-nominated for ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, and AD ASTRA.  He has won MPSE twice and has been nominated for CAS 6 times and for BAFTA 3 times. His other credits include THE HATEFUL EIGHT, DJANGO UNCHAINED, KILL BILL VOLS. I & 2, JACKIE BROWN, IRON MAN, IRON MAN 2, COWBOYS & ALIENS, THE MASTER, WEDDING CRASHERS and over one hundred other films. He has had a 30-year collaboration with Quentin Tarantino.

Mr. Ulano is past president of IATSE Local 695 (the film sound unionin Hollywood) where he served 5 terms and also served eight terms on the executive committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Sound Branch. He has sat ten terms as a board member for the Cinema Audio Society and served as president of that organization for two terms. 

For many years, Mark has been an advocate for the motion picture sound community and it’s creative contribution to Cinema storytelling. He has spoken on this topic for DGA, AES, MIX/CAS, MPSE, Tao Jing University-Shanghai, Dutch Film Academy, BejingFilm Academy, CSMPTE – Chengdu China, UCSB, School of Visual Arts, Art Center College of Design, Norwegian Bksjoe Sound Symposium, British Rycote Sound Symposium, Canon’s The Sound of Films: A Sound Course for DPs and others, BAFTA online Guru teaching project, Annapurna online teaching project, Faculty Maine Media Workshops, Member of EUC California Incentive Committee. Director/Producer 14 documentaries. Author of over 50 articles, interviews and reviews related to Production Sound Mixing. BFA school of Visual Arts NYC , Fluent in ASL, American Sign Language. 2nd generation percussionist, and 40 year collector of early cinema literature.

 

He has authored over 75 articles, interviews and reviews related to Production Sound Mixing. He has also directed 16 documentaries including I LOVE WHAT I DO and JULIANNA: A PORTRAIT. Fluent in ASL, American Sign Language. 2nd generation percussionist, and 40 year collector of early cinema literature.
