From Preproduction to Production: Postviz, Virtual Scouting, and Real-Time Camera Tracking Workflows

Dr. Vilchis, is a virtual production researcher, educator, and technology specialist currently working at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, where he contributes to the development of research and education initiatives in virtual production and real-time filmmaking. His work bridges creative production and emerging technologies, with a particular focus on real-time camera tracking, motion capture, digital humans, artificial intelligence, and new workflows that connect pre-production, production, and post-production.
Before joining the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Carlos worked in the film and visual effects industry, including as a Senior Motion Capture Technical Director at Industrial Light & Magic’s StageCraft team in Vancouver. He contributed to the Emmy Award-winning development of ILM StageCraft and has worked with broadcasters, universities, studios, and technology companies across North America, Europe, and Latin America. An Unreal Authorized Instructor and member of the Visual Effects Society, his current research explores how tools such as real-time tracking, postviz, photogrammetry, and Gaussian Splatting can make advanced production workflows more accessible not only to technical teams, but also to producers, directors, and cinematographers.
