VES Award Nominee 2016, Visual Effects Supervisor - Image Engine
With a career in visual effects spanning 15 years, Joao brings a diverse experience and deep skill set to Image Engine. Having joined the studio in 2012, Joao initially contributed his expertise to RIPD, Lone Survivor and Chappie, before stepped up as a compositing supervisor for San Andreasand Jurassic World.
Joao was deeply involved in compositing processes across Jurassic World. He expertly managed various assets, seamlessly integrating them into shots, while also working closely with the lighting and lookdev teams to ensure the film’s velociraptors felt fully believable throughout. Importantly, Joao worked to ensure all processes were easy to replicate, ensuring a higher level of quality across all sequences.
Joao’s skillset comes from a long and varied career, which commenced in the late 90s. He started out as a 3D generalist in his home country of Brazil, and in 2002 was hired as a Flame Artist. Over the following years Joao worked at some of Brazil’s top post-production companies on commercial projects for clients like GM, Coca-Cola and Santander. The industry’s fast pace shaped Joao’s artistic and technical skills, and instilled a deep understanding of the post-production process.
In 2006 he changed paths and moved into the feature film industry. Joao relocated to Canada and contributed to projects such as 300, Avatar, The Twilight Saga, Ender’s Game and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Joao brings enthusiasm and a can-do attitude to his projects at Image Engine. His high-quality results are achieved by the undivided attention and hands-on experience he brings to the table, along with the same passion that initially inspired him to join the industry.
His career continues to grow as he takes on exciting challenges as Visual Effects Supervisor. His latest contributions include Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit and Lost In Space.
