Fly 'Over the Moon': An Animated Behind-the-Scenes Conversation

Production designer, Celine Desrumaux, and Imageworks CG supervisor Clara Chan, Animation Supervisor Sasha Kapijimpanga and VFX Supervisor David Smith will take you behind-the-scenes of this exhilarating animated musical adventure, exploring the creative and innovative techniques applied in order to bring legendary director, Glen Keane's, vision to life. 

The discussion will be moderated by Ramin Zahed, Editor in Chief of Animation Magazine.

Céline Desrumaux is an award-winning production designer. She has worked on numerous projects including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Back to the Moon, Asterix, and Hotel Transylvania 3. Céline was nominated for an Annie Award in 2017 for her production design on The Little Prince. The following year she worked with Google Spotlight Stories and Chromosphere on the John Kahrs directed animated short Age of Sail, for which was awarded both an Emmy and Annie Award in 2019 for her production design. Céline is currently the production designer on the Netflix and Pearl Studio animated feature Over the Moon.

Clara Chan is a computer graphics supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks. She has contributed to OVER THE MOON, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3, THE EMOJI MOVIE, and STORKS. Previously, Chan served as a senior technical director at Imageworks. Her credits include: HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, CATS & DOGS 2, G-FORCE, BEOWULF, MONSTER HOUSE, POLAR EXPRESS, EARLY BLOOMER, and STUART LITTLE 2. Earlier in her career, Chan worked as a software engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab. Chan earned a B.S. in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree in visualization sciences from Texas A & M University.

Sebastian "Sacha" Kapijimpanga is an animation supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, most recently completing work on the Netflix animated feature OVER THE MOON, directed by the legendary Glen Keane. Kapijimpanga previously supervised animation on the live-action GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, THE EMOJI MOVIE, THE SMURFS 2, and THE SMURFS: A CHRISTMAS CAROL. He also served as lead animator HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, THE SMURFS, and G-FORCE. Kapijimpanga's other Imageworks credits include: ALICE IN WONDERLAND, which was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects, I AM LEGEND, BEOWULF, SURF'S UP, MONSTER HOUSE, and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE.

David Smith is a visual effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, most recently supervising the Netflix animated feature OVER THE MOON, directed by the legendary Glen Keane. Previously, Smith served as VFX Supervisor on THE EMOJI MOVIE and STORKS and as digital effects supervisor on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, directed by Marc Webb. Smith has worked on multiple Academy Award®-nominated features including: THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE (2006 Academy Award® nominee, Achievement in Visual Effects), HOLLOW MAN (2000 Academy Award® nominee, Achievement in Visual Effects), STUART LITTLE (1999 Academy Award® nominee, Achievement in Visual Effects), STARSHIP TROOPERS (1998 Academy Award® nominee, Achievement in Visual Effects). During his time at Imageworks, Smith has worked on many other films including: EAGLE EYE, I AM LEGEND, GREEN LANTERN, CATS AND DOGS 2, BEOWULF, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE and GODZILLA. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Television and Film from San Diego State University. He began his entertainment career as a runner at Boss Film Studios in 1991. While working in the Boss purchasing department, Smith offered to also work nights and mornings in the rapidly expanding CGI department. Smith quickly moved up to senior technical director working on such features as SPECIES and OUTBREAK and animating on the theme park ride "Scuba Dog." He was promoted to scene supervisor for MULTIPLICITY, creating on-set pre-visualization and leading a team of compositors to complete the effects work. David has been a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences since 2013.

Ramin Zahed is a Los Angeles.-based author and journalist who specializes in animation, visual effects, pop culture and indie films. He is the Editor in Chief of Animation Magazine and has written for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, Sight and Sound, and others. Zahed is the author of many books on animation, including The Art of Connected, The Art of Klaus, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: The Art of the Movie, The Art of Missing Link and J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World: Movie Magic.
