The VFX & Animation of Disney's The One and Only Ivan

In this presentation, Production VFX Supervisor Nick Davis will pull back the curtain on the visual effects of The One and Only Ivan. MPC Film were invited to be part of  the filmmaking process from day one, helping to conceive a custom production workflow which would enable director Thea Sharrock to realise a story predominantly led by animals, with large passages of script absent of human performers. Nick Davis met with the filmmakers in 2017 to build the blueprint and plan the visual effects requirements for the project, which included designs for the characters and environments, planning aVirtual Photography, previs and overseeing the complex VFX and animation work that was to be crafted by MPC Film’s artists.

 

Nick Davis short bio: Nick Davis is an experienced Production VFX Supervisor who has worked behind the camera on more than 20 major feature films.  Nick has worked alongside some of the industry’s most notable filmmakers, offering his creative and technical expertise on visual effects driven movies including Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, the Harry Potter series, Edge of Tomorrow and Clash of the Titans.

 

Nick has received a number of accolades throughout his career, including an Academy Award nomination for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and a BAFTA for Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 

 

He began his career in the film industry in 1989 when he moved to Los Angeles to be trained as a Cameraman at Introvision. Shortly afterwards, he dedicated himself to the art and science of visual effects, transferring his knowledge of filmmaking to the growing computer graphics world.
