How to be an Artist Working in Free to Play (F2P)

Art is normally about channelling your creativity and imagination into a subject that is close to your heart but what happens when you create something around a subject that may be totally alien to you? How do you overcome this and still manage to create the best work you can around a strict sand box of brand rules, analytics, audience and an IP?
