The VIEW Conference is proud to say that five speakers and projects from the most recent session have been nominated for Academy Awards. Cartoon Saloon's animated film "The Breadwinner," represented at the conference by technical director Mark Mullery, has been nominated for best animated feature. The film, directed by Nora Twomey, tells the story of a young Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy to help provide for her family during the time of Taliban rule.
Also nominated for best animated feature is "Loving Vincent," which told of the mystery surroundeding artist Vincent Van Gogh's final days. Investor Steve Muench attended VIEW to talk about the making of the unique film, which was hand-painted by more than 100 artists. The film was first shot using live actors, including Saoirse Ronan, who was also nominated as best actress for her work in "Lady Bird." More than 65,000 oil paintings were created in Van Gogh's style.
Three VIEW Conference speakers are facing each other in the visual effects category. John Nelson is nominated for his work on "Blade Runner 2049," Christopher Townsend is nominated for "Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and Joe Letteri is nominated for "War for the Planet of the Apes."
