Abstract
Challenge towards cinematography from games – Resident Evil: Degeneration Project
p>Resident Evil games have been a global success since the first launch in 1996. This time it will make appearance as a full-CG film directed by special effects specialist Makoto Kamiya, who has previously directed ‘Japan Sinks’ (2006) and ‘L Change the World’ (2008). Script is by Shotaro Suga and his works include ‘Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex’ (2002), ‘Casshern’ (2004). Production is by Digital Frontier who is literally one of the frontiers of introducing Full CG films into the major screens with the ‘Appleseed’ (2004) and ‘EX Machina’ (2007). Resident Evil: Degeneration Project is produced by Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who also previously produced ‘Resident Evil4’ (2005) and ‘Devil May Cry 4’ (2008).
It was in autumn 2006 that the project was brought to life. The distributor Sony Pictures offered a collaborative partnership in this full-CG project with Hiroyuki Kobayashi as the producer. Same year Makoto Kamiya was chosen as the director, Shotaro Suga as the scripter and Digital Frontier as the production Studio where they began the actual production in January 2007. We then spent half a year on scripts while character designing in parallel, as well as the production of the storyboard and the motion capturing data to be used for teaser trailers. Because the majority of the characters were set as Americans, the motion capturing audition was held in the US. There were some difficulties in gathering all the actors to Japan but finally started on the data gathering process in late November. We then had to rush because the actors had to head home for Christmas but the process was successfully completed just in time. Action scene capturing was continued with the Japanese cast until the end of December and as of January 2008 We started the animatics process and the texturing of CGs.
