| Born in 1935, Raffaele
Meo is a full professor of Information Elaboration Systems
at the Polytechnic of Turin. He has pioneered works in the
digital elaboration of signals, and he was one of the first
to produce an automatic voice recognizer. He has also realized
notable results in the field of codification which have opened
the way for new scientific developments and applications.
His personal engagement on research has gone with his commitment
to promote the scientific and educational activity on informatics,
delivering TV courses within the Nettuno Project. He has been
the headmaster of the C.N.R. Progetto Finalizzato Informatica,
of Centro di ricerca sull’Elaborazione Numerale dei
Segnali, and of Centro di Supercalcolo del Piemonte.
His work has been awarded the Lori and Bonavera prizes for
Electrical Engineering, the Italgas Ricerca e Innovazione
per l’Informatica prize (1987), and the Premio Galileo
for mathematical reporting. Meo is a national associate of
Accademia delle Scienze and he is among the founders of CentroScienza.

Open Source Technologies
for Streaming and Videoconferences
(Tecnologie Open Source per lo streaming e le videoconferenze)
First of all the global free software world
and the scenario of market, technologies and Internet tools
for multimediality will be analyzed. Subsequently, some new
solutions to achieve the streaming and the videoconference
by means of Free and Open Source Tools will be presented.
In particular, the most advanced Italian projects in the domain
will be illustrated, focusing the attention on the Feng Project
by Polytechnic of Turin.
During the conference, moreover, the project for a Video Sharing
Platform – named Web Esof – dedicated to the educational
world will be exclusive presented. Web Esof is a multimedia
environment that aims to offer to all the world, and to the
developing countries in particular, the chance to participate
actively in conferences and debates.
In virtue of its low access barriers, Web Esof has already
been surnamed the You Tube for School and Science, and it
has been the winner hands-down for the election of Turin as
the hosting location of Euroscience Open Forum 2010, the biggest
European Forum devoted to scientific research and technological
innovation.
