ELEPHANTS'
NIGHT
Two
Great Animated Feature Films
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITALY
Produced by Kantana Animation (Sailor moon and
Dragon Ball) and directed by Kompin Kemgumnird,
Khan Kluay is the first the first full length 3D animation
feature (95’) created and produced solely by Thai people.
Khan Kluay presents a young elephant’s epic and
touching odyssey: Motivated by the wish to find his missing father,
through a physical, moral, and spiritual path, he becomes Chao
Phraya Prab Hongsawadee, the greatest war elephant of all time.
But the film is not just the story – that small children
undoubtedly will love – of an elephant and of various memorable
characters he meets throughout his journey. Khan Kluay
is also a wonderful fresco about Thai culture and history, a story
about the animal considered by Thai people to be a national symbol
and about the close relationship that Thai people have had for
centuries whit elephants, for their role at work, in national
defense, and generally in traditional myths and stories.
Free Jimmy is a grotesque, satiric, just not for
small children comedy. It is scruffy and tacky, loaded with satiric
wit and political incorrectness; the characters are wicked and bad-tempered.
The main character is a junkie circus elephant whose story intertwines
with that of three gangsters and of a deranged bunch of animal activist,
in a swirling succession of pursuits and splatter scenes. Produced
by the Norwegian Storm Studio making use of the
most advanced 3D technology, written and directed by the legendary
artist Christopher
Nielsen, and with a cast that includes – among
others – Woody Harrelson (Natural Born Killers),
Jim Broadbent (Bridget Jones 1 and 2, The
Chronicles of Narnia), Emilia Fox (The Pianist by
Roman Polanski), Free Jimmy represents a new frontier of
animated film: A realistic, grunge look for a film extremely rich
in details and dialogues. Well-known CGI technology developed by
Pixar is used and abused in Free Jimmy to create
a totally different feeling.
Free Jimmy has been awarded with several prizes, included
“Best Film” award at Amanda 2006 and the grand prix
for best feature at France’s Annecy International Animated
Film Festival.
